Lilith - The Black Moon & Pamela Geller

I'd never heard of Pamela Geller until I read reports of the shootings on Sunday at a Muhammad Art Exhibit & Contest in Garland, Texas, organized by her. The event was, in my opinion, deliberately provocative - a means of stirring up trouble disguised as something related to "free speech". Pamela Geller is, apparently, president of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, an anti-Islamic organization that is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

I looked at Geller's natal chart at Astrotheme (HERE), noticed first that Black Moon Lilith is shown, conjunct Geller's natal Mars in Aries. Interesting!

Coincidentally, I had intended to re-air an old post of mine this week on that very topic: Black Moon Lilith. In that post, tidied up and re-posted below, I mentioned not being too keen on using mythology to interpret possible meanings of Black Moon Lilith in a natal chart. However, some might say that Ms Geller's case does rather fit the mythology - what do you think?

BLACK MOON LILITH

Hat-tip for diagram to Mountain Astrologer
I have the uneasy feeling that a lot that is of dubious value to astrology has been written about Black Moon Lilith. I've pontificated on the subject in the past, but a re-airing of my thoughts for 2015 wouldn't be out of line.

Black Moon Lilith (aka here as BML) is a mathematically calculated point in an astrological chart, the point at which the Moon is at its farthest from the Earth - known as the Moon's "apogee". Some astrologers view the Black Moon as being not the apogee of the elliptical orbit, but the empty focus of the ellipse.....In practice, the Apogee and the Empty Focus can be thought of as being in the same place on the chart, but the difference in symbolism can be relevant. (See http://serennu.com for more detail).

I can accept the notion that this may well be a sensitive point in a natal or other type of chart, in the same way the angles,Vertex and Moon's Nodes are sensitive points. Anything more than that, for me, has to remain nebulous.

There are two ways of calculating BML - its True position and its Mean position. Some software uses one, and some the other. This adds further room for doubt about somewhat iffy cookbook type interpretations assigned to the Black Moon. Most of these appear to be based purely on mythology.

Even more confusion can arise unless it's realised that other celestial bodies also bear the name Lilith. There's an asteroid Lilith, as well as a hypothetical and controversial second Moon of Earth, often referred to as Dark Moon Lilith.

The astrological glyph for Black Moon Lilith (the Moon's apogee) is a thick black crescent Moon atop a cross. Asteroid Lilith has a different glyph which looks like a four-pronged fork with a tick at the right hand side of its base.

Astrologers who use BML seem to consider its significance to be somewhat negative, based purely on the mythical name it bears. "Lilith" - a storm demon, prostitute goddess.... name anything female and negative, and Lilith is it! I'm sticking to my theory that Black Moon Lilith is simply another sensitive point in the chart. Mythology? Bah humbug!

Hat-tip HERE for illustration
"Lilith is a female Mesopotamian night demon believed to harm male children. In Isaiah 34:14, Lilith is a kind of night-demon or animal, translated as onokentauros; in the Septuagint, as lamia; "witch" by Hieronymus of Cardia; and as screech owl in the King James Version of the Bible. In the Talmud and Midrash, Lilith appears as a night demon. She is often identified as the first wife of Adam and sometimes thought to be the mother of all incubi and succubi, a legend that arose in the Middle Ages ".
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilith)
Black Moon Lilith in my own natal chart lies in Aquarius (early or late in the sign depending on True or Mean version). The early version is only 2 degrees from my natal Sun; the later version is 1 degree from my relocated ascendant, so BML has followed me around! I'm not, and have never been, anything like a storm demon, night demon, femme fatale, or prostitute goddess, I promise! But the fact that BML is close to my natal Sun might have added to the intensity of effects I've experienced when Uranus and Neptune have transited natal Aquarius Sun in the past.

NOTE: There's an online ephemeris showing True and Mean positions of Black Moon Lilith in the 20th century, courtesy of Chris Mitchell - see HERE. Alternatvely Astrodienst can calculate BML's position in your natal chart, using their Extended Chart Selection.

IMMODEST MONDAY ~ 3 Porn Stars Born 16 July

As I glanced down Wiki's list of births for 16 July, I spotted three female porn stars, two of them even born in the same year, same country! What was it in the astro-atmosphere on 16 July that might reflect this?

Any additional thoughts from passing readers will be gratefully received - I suspect there could be something useful I haven't spotted.

The three women:
Jesse Jane ~ 16 July 1980, Fort Worth, Texas.
Justine Joli ~ 16 July 1980, St. Louis Missouri.
Tina Tyler ~ 16 July 1965, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

I can only trust that these dates from Wikipedia are accurate, Astrodatabank hasn't dipped its toes into the 16 July porn star crop's data as yet.

The two 1980 births stood out, so I searched for other 16 July 1980 births and found no other porn stars, but several male sporting types: Australian golfer, Canadian cricketer, Jaspanese skeleton racer (whatever that is), female weightlifter, Turkish, Kazakhstani and Australian footballers - oh, and on that date a derecho (word I learned very recently due to one of these having occurred this month) in Michigan caused a lot of damage.

From Wikipedia's biographical information on this trio of porn stars it would seem that, apart from their gravitation to become porn stars, their earliest backgrounds have little in common, but later on in life the two born 1980 have described themselves as bisexual.

Jesse Jane: military "brat", cheerleader. In 2000, she gave birth to a boy. Has
described herself as bisexual. In 2004, she stated on the Howard Stern Show that she had a hysterectomy due to now dormant cervical cancer. Married to fellow porn star Rick Patrick 2007-2012.

Justine Joli: In her young days summers were spent between a farm in Hannibal, Missouri and Crested Butte, Colorado. She did ballet from age 3 to age 15.
She revealed on the Howard Stern Show and the Fox News program, Geraldo at Large, that she was molested from age 3 to 10 by three men, one of whom was her grandmother's ex-husband. Two of the three men were prosecuted and incarcerated. Justine has been in therapy since the age of 13. In her late teens, she moved to the Los Angeles area with her mother............................Joli describes herself as bisexual (being "60/40" in her preference toward men and women, respectively).
She is a self described geek with a love of anime, science fiction, Macs and cartoons. She is also into nude sports, naked bungee jumping and naked whitewater rafting. She was romantically involved with porn director D. Cypher for several years.

Looking at the natal charts of Jesse Jane and Justine Joli, without knowledge of their birth times can tell us only some basics.

Apart from zodiac sign Scorpio, 8th house, and Pluto, Black Moon Lilith is what springs to mind when seeking indication of anything related to sex and eroticism in a chart. Black Moon Lilith is a sensitive point in the natal chart, the point of the Moon's apogee (greatest distance from Earth). Two earlier posts on Black Moon Lilith are here and here.

In one of those posts I wrote: "Astrologers who choose to use BML seem to consider its significance to be somewhat negative, based purely on the mythical name it bears. "Lilith": a storm demon, prostitute goddess.... name anything female and negative, and Lilith is it! I'm sticking to my theory that Black Moon Lilith is, if anything at all, another sensitive point in the chart."

I cranked up my astro software to again show Black Moon Lilith's position in these charts. The BML glyph is a thick crescent atop a cross (obtusely, and because I've forgotten how to adjust colours, it came up in red.) I think my software shows the "true" rather than the "mean" position of BML, by the way.

If considering BML as a sensitive point, then any planet conjoining it could take on additional flavours and emphasis - as when a planet falls on one of the angles of a natal chart, or a Moon's node.

In Jesse's and Justine's charts BML falls close to Pluto (planet of passion, darkness, eroticism). Unfortunately, without times of birth we can't say exactly where the conjunction lies, house-wise, angle-wise.

At first glance, without BML, and with times of birth unknown, the charts don't offer much to account for the fact that two women born the same day, same year, same country would channel their energies into what is, after all, a fairly unusual occupation. The Moon's exact degree will not be exactly as shown, but would be in Virgo between 9 and 21 degrees.

Mars is conjunct Fixed Star Zaniah. Eric Morse in The Living Stars says about (Zaniah) a Mercury-Venus-type star:
"The name must bring a smile to astrologers who often associate Mercury with money and Venus with love, and Ptolemy having put the money first for Zaniyah means "Adulteress" or "Harlot". We have seen how Virgo has had such a reputation in past times, having been Lilith and Ashtoreth as much as more honored ladies like Mary. A little amusement is permitted in reading older books in which the word is either not translated at all, or the authors digress into a learned discussion on whether or not this star belongs to a group once known as the "Kennels", along with the title "little mosque" [for Zavijava], Victorian avoidance of the unmentionable does have its comic side!"
Not sure what to make of that!

Born in 1965, 15 years earlier than Jesse and Justine, Tina's chart is quite different, planets more widely spread across the chart - more versatile, wider interests than porn?

Tina Tyler created her stage name by combining the first name of actress Tina Louise and the last name of Aerosmith's lead singer Steven Tyler (LOL!) She grew up with her mother's family in Germany for the first three years of her life. She has said she was "painfully shy" and a bookworm in her childhood. She worked as a shoe salesperson and a receptionist at a modelling agency before becoming a stripper at age 19. She graduated to working as a feature dancer for eight years before entering the adult film industry.

She was married to fellow porn star Tony Tedeschi from 1993 to 1994 another marriage 1984 to 1985 and a third in 1999 . Tyler was diagnosed with skin and breast cancer in the late 2000s. In 2009, after a brief return to the porn industry, Tyler returned to her native Canada to undergo treatments for the cancer, and has said that the prognosis is excellent.

In her case my eye went straight to Saturn opposing the conjunction of Uranus/Pluto, with Neptune in Scorpio linked to Saturn and Sun via trine aspects and Neptune and Sun linked to Uranus/Pluto by sextile. The Grand Trine in Water signs, includes Neptune (illusion) in sexy Scorpio hooked up to Pluto/Uranus (sexy/experimentation) kind of says it all.

NOTE ~~~ Among my archives there's a post on another porn star and her astrology: Linda Lovelace. That post tends to receive "gluts" of hits from time to time, for some unfathomable reason.

Blogging ~ Surprise "Hits"

Blogging, especially astrology blogging, can be, to use an expression beloved by British soccer fans, "a funny old game". Some posts, often those I've especially enjoyed researching, writing - and even reading and re-reading (narcissist!) cause little interest, while a few I've written with some reservation, thinking "Hmmm - nobody'll want to read THIS!" have proven to be constant "hit-getters" over a long period.

The four posts linked below, some posted as long ago as October 2008, still garner views, occasionally gluts of views, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes the person or topic featured may be in the news, or linked to someone in the news; or perhaps there have been links to an archived post on forum message boards, not necessarily astrology forums, resulting in a spike in the statistics.

Black Moon Lilith

A post this week racked up more hits than I've ever seen before:
Monday's post with just a simple mention of Adam Lambert brought lots of visitors from a Fan Forum. Evidence of Adam's burgeoning popularity, and on that score, if little else, I can now say "Told ya so!"
(Other Adam Lambert posts can be accessed by clicking on his name in the Label Cloud in the sidebar).

The posts which spark most interest do not do so, in the main, due to their astrological content. Astrology is still a fringe interest, even though its popularity has increased over decades since the 1960s. I always hope that readers landing, via a link, without any interest in astrology might notice its relevance and leave with the thought at the back of their mind - "well, perhaps astrology isn't as far fatched as I'd thought". This may be a forlorn hope on my part, but it's partly what keeps me inspired enough to spend time blogging.

LETTERMAN etc.

We didn't see David Letterman's unexpected confession last week, in his late night show, but the internet was full of reports of it later, so we caught up rapidly.

I wasn't too surprised by the news. Letterman's a show-biz celebrity, "the casting couch" is, after all, part of show biz legend. Why would we be surprised? As far as I can tell, celebrities, including some politicians, march to a very different drummer from many of us who live outside of those privileged circles.

It did surprise me when the identity of the perpetrator of the proposed extortion was revealed. A man like Robert J. Halderman, with all his experience of journalistic life and show-biz would surely not be naive enough to think he'd get away with his plot - at least, not on the evidence we've seen so far. Unless, perhaps Mr. Halderman is suffering some kind of breakdown following what seems to have been a succession of personally traumatic times, family-wise and finance-wise. If so, his actions could be something akin to, but on a very much more damaging scale than, the celebrities arrested for shoplifting, reports of which surface with some regularity.

I've looked for Mr. Halderman's birth data without success, for I think his chart might be useful in fathoming why on earth he though he could get away with what almost seems like the plot of a bad episode of a TV drama.

Proper astrologers have discussed Letterman's chart at the weekend - Lynn Hayes at Beliefnet, and Shelley Ackerman at Karmic Relief. Shelley does mention Mr. Halderman's date of birth, but I can't find the source or his place of birth, so felt it wise to wait. I'm sure details will surface soon.

My own last assessment of David Letterman and his chart, some months ago during the Sarah Palin debacle, is HERE. I downgraded my previously warm opinion of him then. Looking again at the chart in my old post, I see that Black Moon Lilith conjoins his natal Moon - and I did try to interpret that at the time. I'm beginning to get the hang of BML - there's a little more evidence here to add to my collection!

Letterman obviously did the right thing by making public what would otherwise have been rooted out by media and made even worse. I feel sorry for his wife and son, and of course, for his mother who occasionally appears on his show. Those ladies probably were well aware of his shenanigans. Even so, current publicity will be embarrassing and hurtful.

I have a funny feeling that there's more to this story - another chapter to open. I decided to ask the Tarot, and the 3 cards I drew after shuffling were:
Queen of Swords/3 of Swords/6 of Coins. I'm always amazed at the aptness of the cards! There's a woman, a heartbreak and money (though 6 of Coins is usually linked to philanthropic matters). I won't interpret further, but others will probably see what story might be contained in those cards. Actually, this wasn't exactly what I was expecting. We'll see.

ARTY FARTY FRIDAY ~ Kees van Dongen

I can almost hear a passing reader mumbling "Who the heck is he then?" I said the same when the husband handed me a copy of an old "Réalités" magazine from 1960. The cover bore an image of the painting shown at left. "There's an artist who might be a good subject for you", said the ever helpful spouse, "that painting has always attracted me". "A tad too much eye makeup", I grumbled, "and it reminds me of that dreaded anime style." The painting is "Corn Poppy" by Kees van Dongen

Kees van Dongen, it turns out, was a Dutch painter, born in Rotterdam on 26 January 1877, at, according to Astrodatabank, 7am. He moved to Paris in his twenties and achieved some success, using inspiration from the raw sensuality he found in that great city.

Wikipedia:
"Kees van Dongen developed the lush colours of his Fauvist style. This gained him a solid reputation with the French bourgeoisie and a resultant profitable lifestyle. As a fashionable portraitist his subjects included Arletty, Leopold III of Belgium, Louis Barthou, Sacha Guitry, Anna de Noailles, Maurice Chevalier. With a playful cynicism he remarked of his popularity as a portraitist with high society women; ' The essential thing is to elongate the women and especially to make them slim. After that it just remains to enlarge their jewels. They are ravished.' A remark that allies itself to another of his sayings - ' Painting is the most beautiful of lies.'"
Painters with Sun in Aquarius are not too thick on the ground. Offhand I can only think of Jackson Pollock and Manet. They embraced two very, very different art styles. Kees van Dongen's style is nearer to Manet's than he is to Pollock's, but really it's akin to neither.

A quick look at van Dongen's natal chart then. I'm looking for the key to his pull towards the overt eroticism evident in many of his paintings. This obviously had to do with making his work commercial, as well as satisfying any drive within himself. Still, it ought to be represented in the chart somewhere.

Sun and Mercury conjoined in Aquarius in first house, Black Moon Lilith within a few degrees of them. I haven't made up my mind about Black Moon Lilith yet, I don't necessarily accept its mythical relationship to any demon goddess or negative feminine symbolism. It is actually the point at which the Moon is at its furthest from the Earth - the Moon's apogee. The Moon represents the feminine and all its attributes, so Black Moon Lilith might represent, rather than all the best of "the feminine", i.e. grace, compassion, caring etc. perhaps the more superficial, worldly side of feminine. If that were so, then an artist with this point linked their personal planets could be particularly drawn to that side of "the feminine".

Kees van Dongen's natal Venus (planet of the arts) lies in Capricorn, earthy, business oriented Capricorn, and is in mildly helpful semi-sextile to Black Moon Lilith. For me this symbolises his use of superficial feminine images for commercial motives. This is further underlined by Saturn (ruler of Capricorn) in Pisces, semi-sextiling Sun/Mercury from the other side of Aquarius, and again echoing a purely business link to Piscean creativity. Those two links (to Venus in Capricorn and Saturn in Pisces) are very similar in flavour, I think.

This, from New York Times "The Moment" blog is relevant to those links. It refers to the mutual dislike that existed between van Dongen and Matisse, the more established painter and his contemporary.

"Indeed, Van Dongen enjoyed off-color pleasures that would make Matisse blush, from sketching prostitutes on the piers in Holland to portraiture work of society women in his later years. The joke is that, as a painter for hire, Van Dongen himself became the prostitute. But by refusing to do prim and proper landscapes, he changed the face of Expressionist Fauvism — inadvertently setting the tone for the lascivious dance between art and commerce yet to come."

40 Years Ago Today: A Mission

40 years ago, in 1969 on this day, at 9.32am local time the first manned space mission to land on the Moon, Apollo 11, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA.

Here's the astrological chart for that place and time.

Not marked on the chart, but the ascendant has Fixed Star Regulus, the Royal Star right on it, or within minutes of it. The Sun is 3 degrees from the Moon's apogee (aka Black Moon Lilith) - that probably had some significance, not sure what though! Jupiter and Uranus were conjoined in Airy Libra - Uranus planet of technology, invention and all things new; Jupiter planet of travel and excess (excessive distance in this case!) Mars (dynamic energy) at 2 Sagittarius (Jupiter's sign of rulership) was in helpful sextile to Uranus/Jupiter.

The chart seems appropriate for the matter in hand, well balanced elementally too - though I doubt that any astrologer had a hand in deciding the date and time.

Letterman's Unfunny Palin Jokes

Last week brought me a couple of "I thought he was better than that" moments. One from Adam Lambert in his Rolling Stone interview, about which I've already commented. The second from David Letterman and his unfunny "jokes" about Sarah Palin and her daughter, while they were visiting New York. I won't dignify his words by repeating them, but if any passing reader remains unaware of what was said, a glance at this article at Huffington Post will clarify - though the author of that article concentrates on a political angle, and appears impervious to the kinds of objections I'm outlining here.

I'm no fan of Sarah Palin or her politics, but I do sympathise with her on this occasion. I'm no feminist either, I've always tried to look on people as people, not as men and women, gay and straight, black and white......just all human beings getting along as best we can in this mad, mad world.

Just why is it thought funny and acceptable for male comedians to be offensive to females? Poke fun at their political mis-steps and guffs by all means. Criticise their lack of knowledge and political stances if they don't match yours, but why try to denigrate their appearance or sling around smutty innuendo about their family members? Cheap laughs? Lack of creativity on the part of writers?

I shouldn't have been surprised at Letterman's words really. I've shouted at the TV on several past occasions when he has smirked about Hillary Clinton, her trouser suits, her appearance, her marriage.

On good days, I'd had Letterman down as a basically kindly character who likes to appear unpredictable. I'm beginning to think that he's an unpredictably unpleasant character who likes to appear kindly. He has a son of around 5 years old. I wonder if he'd censor his writers' jokes more closely if he'd had a daughter?

Let's have a look at Letterman's chart. Born on 12 April 1947 in Indianapolis, IN, at 6am (Astrodatabank).

I'm looking mainly for any indication of his apparent attraction to reciting "jokes" which denigrate some members of the female sex. Oh,I know he loves some of his female guests, and is very respectful of his mother, who ocasionally appears on the show. I'm not implying that he's a woman hater. He's inconsistent. If he wants to retain the respect of his audience, more consistency is needed.

The Moon is the most feminine factor in a natal chart. In Letterman's nativity Moon was in Capricorn (serious, a bit old fashioned, business oriented) not likely to enjoy the kinds of jokes to which I'm objecting. But look - look at the glyph one degree from the Moon - that's Black Moon Lilith. I wrote about BML (here). Perhaps it can have a kind of anti-feminine effect, especially when close to natal Moon, meaning that, as in Letterman's case, Moon was almost as far away from Earth as it could ever be; Black Moon Lilith marks the Moon's apogee. The Moon in astrology represents one's inner life and the subconscious, the female, maternal instincts. At Moon's farthest point away from Earth what happens? Lack of appreciation for Moonly matters? I don't know - but I do think it's more than a coincidence that Letterman's Moon is at its apogee.

His natal Mars, (Mars is probably the most masculine factor in a natal chart) is at 00 Aries, the Aries Point a very strong point in the chart, Mars rules Aries - in other words Mars here, the masculine, is just about as strong as it gets. Now,
Letterman doesn't strike me as being overtly masculine, physically, but inwardly, I'd bet he is.

Saturn in Leo trines his Aries Mars, adding a harder and more showy edge to the Aries need to be a bit belligerent on occasion. Sun is in harmonious sextile to shock-worthy Uranus which brings in Letterman's occasional unpredictability. Mercury in gentle Pisces trines Jupiter which lies in darker, more intense Scorpio, thus blending his kindlier side with that rather darker element we occasionly see from him.

To be fair to David Letterman, he did make a kind of apology, after Sarah Palin's objections. He also tried to justify himself. I'd have had more respect if he'd been totally apologetic on all counts. That, apparently, is just not in his nature.

Throwing Light on the Moon

Grant Lewi, in his book "Astrology for the Millions" gives a very helpful description of how the Moon's position is reflected in the personality. I've always found it difficult to disentangle this from the Sun's reflection, and the ascendant sign. I usually think of these three as a kind of cocktail, stirred, not shaken, with Mercury and Venus as a cherry and an olive on the side. Just as you can't possibly extricate one ingredient from another in a cocktail, nor can I quite differentiate my own ingredients, because to me, they are just.....me! Grant Lewi helps me to peer through the swirling stirred cocktail then sip it and identify a particular ingredient.

Grant Lewi's astrological writing has been described as "the most brilliant ever published". He was one of the USA's leading and most popular astrologers in the mid-20th century. These are his words about the Moon, then, from "Astrology for the Millions" :

(Page 132, para.1)

"While the Sun's position by sign determines what motivates and urges dominate your life as it meets the naked eye, the sign position of the Moon tells the desire of your heart which may or may not be expressed or realized in your life. When you "know what you mean but you can't say it", it is your Moon that knows it, and your Sun that can't say it. "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears" are the thoughts of your Moon's nature. The wordless ecstasy, the mute sorrw, the secret dream, the esoteric picture of yourself that you can't get across to the world, or which the world doesn't comprehend or value - these are the product of the Moon in your Vitasphere (natal chart). When you are misunderstood, it is your Moon nature expressed imperfectly, through the Sun sign, that you feel is betrayed. When you know what to do, but can't find the right way to do it, it is your Moon that knows and your Sun that refuses to act in harmony. Also, when you "don't know why I said that", it was your Moon expressing despite your Sun..........Things you know without thought - intuitions, hunches, instincts are products of the Moon. Modes of expression that you feel are truly your deepest self belong to the Moon: art, letters, creative work of any kind; sometimes love; sometimes business."

Black Moon Lilith

I get an uneasy feeling that there's been a lot that's of dubious value to astrology written about Black Moon Lilith.

Black Moon Lilith is a mathematical point in an astrological chart - the point at which the Moon is at its farthest from the Earth - known as the Moon's "apogee". I can accept the notion that this may well be a sensitive point in a natal or other type of chart, in the same way the angles, Vertex and Moon's Nodes are sensitive points. There are two ways of calculating BML - its True position and its Mean position. Some software uses one, and some the other. This adds further room for doubt about somewhat iffy cookbook type interpretations assigned to the Black Moon. Most of these seem to be based purely on mythology.

Even more confusion can arise unless it is realised that other celestial bodies also bear the name Lilith. There's an asteroid called Lilith, as well as a hypothetical and contraversial second Moon of Earth, often referred to as Dark Moon Lilith.

The astrological glyph for Black Moon Lilith (the Moon's apogee) is a thick black crescent Moon atop a cross. Asteroid Lilith has a different glyph which looks like a four-pronged fork with a tick at the right hand side of its base.

There's a brief and clear explanation of all three Liliths at Horoscopeschat

Astrologers who use BML seem to consider its significance to be somewhat negative, based purely on the mythical name it bears. "Lilith" - a storm demon, prostitute goddess.... name anything female and negative, and Lilith is it! I'm sticking to my theory that Black Moon Lilith is simply another sensitive point in the chart.
