Music Monday ~~ Talents On Show

As some posts in my archives attest, I'm a sucker for musical talent shows. Always have been, always will be. From Carroll Levis Discoveries way back in the 1950s in England, and Opportunity Knocks, New Faces, Search for a Star, Fame Academy - all the way up the genealogy of talent shows to Pop Idol, American Idol, The X Factor, Britain's/America's got Talent, The Voice, Nashville Star, Sing-Off......Over the years I've watched and enjoyed every one of them. Husband peeking over my shoulder called out "Major Bowes Amateur Hour, 1940s - Sinatra appeared on that show!"

Nowadays critics refer to such shows as "reality TV". I don't put them in the same category as Big Brother, Survivors, shows about hoarders, restaurant/garden/home/fashion make-overs, Honey Boo-boo (whatever that is) and the rest. Talent shows are different. Or to be absolutely accurate, they used to be different before manipulation of the audience crept in. It's sad, but it was inevitable. As long as they're watched bearing in mind that producers are pulling strings: heart-strings and purse strings, it's still possible to enjoy the shows....most of the time.

This year we're swamped with talent shows. Having noticed what a good, and profitable, audience draw they've become, more producers have jumped onto the talent-cum-money bandwagon. On that same bandwagon are established stars who fancy their chances as judges on the talent shows. Not a good development in my opinion. Attention is now skewed away from the contestants on to "celeb" judges who, in most cases are there only to further their own careers, not potential careers of contestants.

It'd be preferable for talent show judges to come from the "back-room": record producers, voice/stage performance coaches and suchlike. That's not likely to happen. Next best thing is to engage as judges well-known characters from outside the music industry who can at least speak well off-the-cuff, think on their feet, form opinions quickly. There are too few such judges on talent shows at present. In spite of my husband's early warnings about Howard Stern's appointment as judge on this year's America's Got Talent, he turned out to be excellent in the role. Every panel should have at least one such character.
Much as I loved Steven Tyler, his powers of assessment and ability to put them into words during his 2-year stint on Idol should have been better - in fact could hardly have been worse after the first few audition shows. Perhaps producers gagged his distinctly raunchy style and he clammed up? New to the judging panel of The X-Factor this season are Britney Spears and Demi Lovato. It'll be interesting to watch how they shape up comment-wise.

It remains to be discovered, early in 2013 how American Idol's 3/4 new voting panel will work out: long-standing judge Randy Jackson will be joined by Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban (appealing, in theory, respectively to: the over 30s, the under 30s and the country music lovers).

Each panel needs "a clown" - someone who attempts to inject humour into the occasion. Idol tried out Ellen DeGeneres for a season but it wasn't a success. The Voice has Blake Shelton, a likeable country singer who tries hard to have fun with the show, Howie Mandel does likewise on America's Got Talent. X-Factor and Idol might benefit from an injection of humour, judge-wise.

Hosts/Presenters? A job that looks easy but I'd bet it isn't easy at all. Top marks go to Idol's Ryan Seacrest; close second: The Voice's Carson Daly; runner up Nick Cannon (AGT). Others shall remain nameless because, to put it bluntly, they suck.

I'm amazed that all the shows are still able to find sufficient amateur talent to go around. In fact, I'm noticing more and more that some - a good proportion - of the contestants are already semi-professional. I have a suspicion that some have actually been head-hunted by scouts working for the shows. I'd prefer it if this wasn't so, but understand that completely untapped talent is fairly rare these days, and in many cases fairly raw, not yet ready for prime-time. Still, I miss the excitement of the discovery of a brand new singer, never heard before by anyone, anywhere. If one such individual does emerge, very occasionally, their nerves frequently get the better of them, they fail to progress further against more seasoned stage-ready performers.

A few names, not necessarily winners, from talent shows of the recent and not-so-recent past have managed to lodge themselves in my memory:

From long ago, in the UK, Darius Danesh aka Darius Campbell
who seems to have carved out a solid career in the music business. I've mentioned him, and his natal chart, before on these pages - SEE HERE.

Adam Lambert from American Idol, 2009 - follow links in the Label Cloud, to my old posts, for more about him. Adam has toured the USA and abroad, sung in concert with Queen, and in my opinion he hasn't yet quite hit the right spot or genre to reach superstar status.....but he will!

I'm not a big fan of female singers, but have to mention Carrie Underwood, American Idol's gift to country music, and arguably their most successful find so far. Haley Reinhart and her updated jazzy style impressed on last year's Idol.

Josh Krajcik from last year's US X-Factor - I was, and remain a fan, eagerly awaiting release of his first album.

Prince Poppycock from America's Got Talent a couple of years ago; and from the same show this year Andrew DeLeon (true raw untapped talent, and though he didn't go very far - he will, I think, in the future).

There have been several stand-out contestants from the new season's crop of shows among those episodes we've managed to catch so far, but as yet actual names have not registered....that takes time, and seeing several performances. Here's one whose name I did remember, right away: Willie Jones:

The beat of their talent goes on.....and my foot will always be tapping along.

The 12 Zodiac Days of Christmas (and a Josh Krajcik update)

First a quick update about X Factor USA - this week's finale: Our favourite, Josh Krajcik, didn't win, after all, but was runner-up. 19-year old Melanie Amaro took the prize of a 5 million dollar recording contract with Simon Cowell's record label, and an appearance in a Pepsi-Cola commercial. Had any other contestant beat Josh I'd have felt annoyed, but Melanie, with her flawless voice, deserved to win, and in my opinion she needed the win more than Josh. He will do well, now, on his own terms - the way he has performed throughout the competition. I'll be buying his cds, and watching for an opportunity to see him live at some point. A favourite performance below, Up to the Mountain - the song he sang at "bootcamp" - chosen here because there's no bandzilla and loudly screaming audience to spoil the sound; it's a lovely song too. I still haven't found Josh's birthdate. A comment on Josh's birthdate, received this morning, to an earlier post about him, will be copied below, later.

Back to Christmas......

The Twelve Days of Christmas always seems to me to be crying out for an astrological parody: 12 days, 12 zodiac signs! Passing readers who have been wandering into this blog since 2007 (not many, I fear) may possibly recall having seen a version of this post before.

The 12 Days of Christmas is a simple enough traditional song celebrating the season. There have been attempts to attribute to the song some weird code relating to religion, Catholocism in particular, but Snopes.com clears that up - at least to my satisfaction. There is a possibility that the song has been confused with another old song, The New Dial, aka In Those Twelve Days, assigning religious meanings to the 12 days of Christmas in a question and answer style, for example; "What are they which are but six? Six days to labor is not wrong, For God himself did work so long."

Anyway... I decided to haul my old parody from the archives, add different illustration, and post again for this Christmas, 2011:

Music Monday ~ Bruce Channel, Donizetti, & Josh Krajcik

Well-known musical peeps born today, 28 November, are few and far between. Bruce Channel, is one, born 1940 in Jacksonville, Texas, known for his 1962 one hit, million-seller Hey Baby! He and Margaret Cobb wrote the song.
Interesting tidbit with a connection to The Beatles. From Wiki
Channel toured Europe and was supported at one gig by The Beatles, who were then still unknown. John Lennon, who had "Hey! Baby" on his jukebox, was fascinated by (Delbert) McClinton's harmonica (on the recording). A popular urban legend has it that Lennon was taught to play harmonica by McClinton, but by that time, Lennon had already been playing the instrument live for some time. The harmonica break in "Hey! Baby" inspired Lennon's playing on The Beatles' first single, 1962's "Love Me Do", as well as later Beatles records

Back in the mists of time - 1797 - on 29 November (tomorrow), Gaetano Donizetti was born in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy....I'd best not call him a "one hit wonder", but his opera Lucia de Lammermoor is the only work of his even vaguely familiar to this Philistine.
From bio HERE

Donizetti was a friendly and sincere man, supportive of fellow composers and other artists, and loyal to his long-time mentor Mayr. Unfortunately, he endured great tragedy in his personal life. Donizetti had met his wife Virginia Vasselli while he was in Rome in the 1820's and married her in 1828. They had three children, none of whom survived. His parents died in the mid 1830s. A year after his parents' death, his wife succumbed to a cholera epidemic. Donizetti himself suffered from cerebro-spinal syphilis. Symptoms of his illness became evident as early as 1843; by 1845 his condition deteriorated to the point that he was institutionalized for almost a year and a half. His friend from Vienna, Baron Lannoy, interceded with Donizetti's nephew to have the composer moved to a Paris apartment where he could be cared for and receive visitors. Verdi came to see him there and was deeply saddened by his colleague's condition. Friends in Bergamo finally arranged for Donizetti to be brought back to his home town, where he stayed at Baroness Scotti's palace until his death in 1848.
Such a sad life, punctuated by many tragedies! I don't see much indication of that in his natal chart, at least not using the time of birth stated at Astrotheme (7:30 AM). Possibly they used a sunrise chart, though it's not tagged as such. Astrotheme ususally indicates "time unknown" when that is the case.

There are challenging aspects (90* squares) to his Sun and Moon from Uranus and Saturn respectively, and Pluto in Aquarius is in close harmonious trine to Mars in Libra. So the potential "baddies" among the planets are all significantly linked, one way or another, which could, I guess, be interpreted as an indication of a difficult life pattern.

Appropos of nothing but the fact that we think this guy should win X-Factor USA, the only video I'll embed today ~~~

Josh Krajcik, now one of 7 remaining contestants and reportedly received more than one third of total votes last week, when he sang the Rolling Stones' Wild Horses. It's about time somebody took this beautiful song, written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, and did it justice. In my opinion nobody has, so far. I don't dislike like Susan Boyle's interpretation, but really it needs a voice like Josh's; female little girly voices just don't fit, and most rock stars tend to ride roughshod over the lyrics. I hope they get Josh into a recording studio pronto. I'd buy any CD of his right now!

Music Monday ~ Josh Krajcik of The X-Factor USA

We've slogged our way, groaning and complaining (mostly about Simon Cowell) through audition and bootcamp phases of The X Factor USA.

As I've written before on this blog, TV musical talent shows are my/our "guilty pleasures"; such shows are routinely put down as "fodder for the sheeple" by critics. But I love, and get a kick from the idea, that ordinary people of the 99%: car washers, burrito slingers, hairdressers, students, butchers, bakers and what-have-you, if they possess some musical talent, can achieve a few minutes, few weeks, months and maybe years in the limelight, able to do for an audience what most of them feel they were "born to do".

We always find at least one stand-out performer who appeals to us particularly. This time its Josh Krajcik, a 30 year old burrito slinger from Columbus Ohio. He lives with his girlfriend of 8 years, and has a 13-year old daughter. (Thanks to commenter Keena for the information). That's as much as I have so far found out about him. His birth date, unfortunately, isn't anywhere to be found on line. If looks are anything to go by I'd say he has either Taurus or Sagittarius prominent (Sun, Moon and/or ascendant). First time we heard his voice, in the earliest show, we both immediately said "Joe Cocker!!"

Josh is in the "Over 30" category. He will need to remain consistently outstanding to beat some of the youngsters who judges Simon Cowell and L A Reid appear to be pushing forward rather aggressively. I have confidence that, if any of the "Over 30" group can do it, Josh can. It doesn't matter whether he wins or not though - he'll not be slinging burritos again!

This video is from his first performance, when he sang At Last

Here at "bootcamp" at the home of the Over-30s group judge Nicole Scherzinger, with guest judge Enrico Iglesias. He sings The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

Well....he curls MY toes!!! He'll perform again this week, on the first show on which the TV audience gets an opportunity to vote.

Anyone know his date of birth?

Finally, as it's Hallowe'en tonight, something to help create the atmosphere:

Video of Night on Bald Mountain from Disney's wonderful Fantasia...
..... all very Scorpio, in tune with astrological position of the Sun
on 31 October.
