Loveless Favourites

So many songs are about love and romance, but once one begins to think along lyrically loveless lines, there are equally as many that are not. Three of my favourite loveless lyrics, plus three from Himself (aka anyjazz ):

Anyjazz chose:
Strange Fruit ~ Billie Holiday

Penny Lane ~ The Beatles

MaƱana ~ Peggy Lee

From Yours Truly:

Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime ~ George Michael

Sailing to Philadephia ~ Mark Knopfler/James Taylor

Proud Mary ~ Tina Turner (You might need to fasten your seat belts for this one, it's a long rough ride - but fun!)

What are your "loveless" favourites?

Sonny ~ thank for thos - 3 good ones!
(I often think of the 2nd one as my own signature song ;-) )

mike ~ thanks for that good selection. I hadn't heard the first one for years - liked it a lot. 'Change is Gonna Come' is a favourite of mine too.

Anon/kidd ~ Thank you for these songs.
First video has some super photos, as well as the beautiful music (yep, I know the words too.) :-)

'Winchester Cathedral', a good song - it's kinda sorta about love though isn't it?
Now everyone knows just how much I needed that gal
She wouldn't have gone far away
If only you'd started ringing your bell

The 3rd choice was new to me - never did get on well with Led Z, but it's an interesting ditty!

This song was inspired by Robert Plant’s dog Strider, who he named after the Lord of the Rings character (better known as Aragorn but called Strider by the hobbits).

Bob ~ Great collection there - thank you! Most are favourites of mine too.
But I hadn't heard Elvis with "If I Can Dream" before - good one!

Yes, there are several Simon and Garfunkels and Mamas & Papas which would qualify too.

I especially like Paul Simon's "American Tune" too - and that would qualify.

Anon/kidd ~ Re the ELO song - another new one to me - I like the classical-sounding bits. I suppose it's another take on the good v. evil fight - "going to Hell in a handbasket" kind of thing.

Yep songs about childhhod and car songs - good picks!

Two more car songs spring to mind now - Beach Boys with "Little Deuce Coop" and there was one about the Mercury car too that I recall.
Heck, there's a long list of car songs here - but most I've never heard of:

I ought to include the song here which brought my blog more comment than I'd ever had - in 2008 and later.

"Human" by The Killers

"Human" went right by me in 2008...I was preoccupied the first decade of the 2000s. If not for your comment, I'd never have known the song or group existed...LOL. I viewed the Wiki page and it states, "In 2014, it ["Human"] was voted the "weirdest lyric of all time" by a Blinkbox survey."

Twilight said...

mike (again) ~ It, and the band, would've gone by me too if I hadn't seen The Killers perform the song on SNL and felt intrigued.

It was fun looking into the various interpretation of the lyrics, both here in comments and elsewhere online.

The lyrics are a mix of an Hunter S. Thompson suicide theme and the question of whether we have free will (human) or are somehow predestined puppets (dancers) - my eventual conclusion on meaning.
Led me to some interesting reading about Hunter S. Thompson anyway.

Anon/kidd ~ Oh my! Now that's an eclectic selection if ever I saw one!
All new to me except the last one - love the performance of that Barber!

The first one has some good graphics, enjoyed watching - listening not so much. ;-)

"Freewill" by Rush is along roughly the same lines as "Human" - good one!

I left comment #82 on the "Human" post, Twilight! I thought your post on Linda Lovelace was the most popular. Does the "Human" post have the most comments and the Lovelace post have the most view-hits?

"On August 20, 2005, in a private funeral, Thompson's ashes were fired from a cannon. This was accompanied by red, white, blue and green fireworks—all to the tune of Norman Greenbaum's 'Spirit in the Sky' and Bob Dylan's 'Mr. Tambourine Man'".

mike (again) ~ Thanks for keeping it alive! Yes Linda Lovelace post has 77,198 views but just 12 comments, whereas "Human" has 10,439 views and 81 comments (including mine).

Those were good choices for the funeral!

I can't get enough.

Jackie Evancho stunning performance!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6GItDikjzE

I know a large part of what stirs me is the youth of most of the performers on these shows and sometimes the material, as in this little angels case.

Twilight said...

Bob ~ I remember Jackie Evancho winning America's Got Talent, yes - a modern prodigy for sure. I have seen videos of the other wee singers - they are in the same category too.

Jackie appeared, I think as a guest, on AGT last season, a rather more grown up version of that little girl, but equally stunning vocals, still lovely too.

This is a fine post. It makes your readers think. Plus it brought out some commenters who actually LISTEN to music. I congratulate them on the scope of their taste.

Much of the sound being offered as music today is not even music at all and the lyrics not anything resembling poetry. Of course it is a broad arc that the musical pendulum swings. Our modern popular music includes such masterpieces as “How Much Is That Doggie in the Window” and “Music Box Dancer”, “The Boxer” and “Cat in the Cradle”, “Your Feet’s Too Big” and “Gimme a Pigfoot”, “Mommy’s Little Monster” and “Kill the Poor” but where any one of us fits on the musical arc is a matter of preference. The reasons for that “preference” are getting too complex to think about.

anyjazz ~ Thank you kindly on behalf of us all. :-) We try!

The well of music is so deep and wide that one could go on and on fishing out gems (and old boots too). I prefer music from the 20th century, but am always listening for something new ...."All About That Bass" for instance:

Good to seem a couple of American Idol alumni there!
