To Mark The ECLIPSE

A total solar eclipse will occur tomorrow, 22 July, though will probably not be visible to any passing reader of this blog. It will fall in the last degree of the zodiac sign Cancer. Interesting detail about this eclipse at Wikipedia.

I don't know whether eclipses have been consistently good predictive tools for world events, or in relation to natal charts. My natal Sun was directly hit by the solar eclipse in January - nothing of interest to report. Neither could I recall anything of significance from the 1990 eclipse in the same part of Aquarius. I have a sneaking suspicion that there probably needs to be at least one other factor in a natal chart "ripe" for eventfulness exactly at eclipse time, before something memorable occurs. The eclipse could provide a tipping point, or add more intensity to an event, I guess. That's just my take on it. In any one lifetime it could even happen that no eclipse arrives at just the right time to tip things into action.

A couple of items to mark the eclipse:
a Total Eclipse in Art, and a Total Eclipse of the Heart.

"ASTRONOMERS STUDYING AN ECLIPSE" by Antoine Caron (c.1575). In those days the astronomers were probably astrologers too.

  1. The skies these nights are magic, I am totally awestruck by the stars and the Milky Way. How tiny we all are and what an influence these celestial beings exert on us. I am almost manic lately and wonder if this is the influence of the moon....

  2. Hmm, the eeriness of an observed eclipse is probably more potently evident than whatever else happens to us personally. I found out recently that there was a total eclipse within 20 mins of my birth — definitely signing off the easy life and heralding a strange new world!
Awake in the night, I pondered that if time is as non-linear as we like to think, mayn't eclipse effects be as potent before the event as after?

  3. Didn't mean to be 'anonymous' above, not sure why ... maybe getting eclipsed already...

  4. WWW ~~~ Manic....well, that transiting Jupiter/Neptune conjunction is opposite your natal Sun. Could have something to do with excessive energy, mental or physical. :-)

Hmmmm - well the eclipse near your birth time definitely was a tipping point for you and your mother! :-)

I really don't know about pre-eclipse effects, I don't recall reading anything about them.
Pre-natal eclipse is discussed quite often, being the last eclipse before a person's birth - it's supposed to have some kind of bearing on the new life. But there are so many, many factors which can be taken into account in astrology, that if we consider them all it just gets silly. You can make anything mean anything. That's why I like to stick to a minimalist approach. If it works - it must be able to work with the basics, to begin with.

  8. it seems logical that the astrological effects of an eclipse would be felt most strongly in the regions where it was visible. in this case, i think it was mostly visible in china or someplace on the other side of the globe.

  9. Shawn ~~~ Yes, that does seem logical. I don't know - I'm right on the fence about eclipses in general, and their effect or non-effects. Watching is the only remedy I guess. :-)

  10. In my first Sparrow Chat post after arriving back from vacation, I described the eclipse as, "...a routine celestial happening of no consequence whatever to the human race..."

While writing it I couldn't help but smile, and wonder if you'd agree.

  11. RJ ~~~ Hi again - good to see you back blogging !

Eclipses are certainly routine - they come along as regularly as the Eurovision Song Contest to remind us of how our solar system works.

Whether they are of any great consequence is a moot point. Most astrologers think they are, I'm on the fence about it. In the great scheme of things, I guess they do regularly assure us that "the universe is unfolding as it should". :-)
