Arty Farty Friday ~ James E. Brewton

At the entrance to the rabbit-hole plumbed in yesterday's post was an American painter:
James E. Brewton. If a passing reader has not heard the name before, part of the reason could be that Brewton committed suicide in his mid-thirties. Photographs of this artist are hard to find - that on the right is the best I found, taken as he arrived home from service in Korea in the 1950s.

Brewton was born, in Toledo, Ohio, on this day:
4 November, in 1930. He died on 11 May 1967, when he shot himself. Wikipedia states that he had long suffered severe back pain, and faced partial paralysis, even if any possible spine surgery were to be successful.

There's a brief biography of James Brewton written by his daughter, Emily at Art & Honor.com HERE; also at PASC, HERE

Snips:
While he is known for portraits, prints and his abstract, graffiti-inspired paintings, Jim's training was traditional. He studied at the Ruskin School at Oxford in 1954-55 and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) from 1955 through 1958.

Jim was my father, an avant-garde painter and printmaker who died by his own hand in 1967. Our household in Philadelphia had very few of his pictures (my parents had broken up), and I grew up knowing little about his art. After two memorial shows in Philadelphia—in 1968 and 1971—his artwork was dispersed and the world forgot Jim. Thirty-seven years passed. On a February afternoon in 2008, I noticed an ad in an old copy of ARTNews. It was for Michael Taylor’s show at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, “Thomas Chimes: A Life in Pataphysics.” “Pataphysics” got my attention; I vaguely remembered Jim’s print, The Pataphysics Times (1964). I’d thought Jim was the only Philadelphia artist who admired Alfred Jarry, back in the day.
Some of Brewton's artwork can be seen HERE;
and via Google Image HERE.

The Pataphysics Times, created by Brewton in 1964, relates back to yesterday's post:

ASTROLOGY

James E. Brewton born in Toledo, Ohio on 4 November 1930 - 12 noon chart below, time of birth not known.

Alfred Jarry's natal chart (from yesterday's post)

The only quick point I'm going to make on the astrology of James E. Brewton is to point out a similarity to the natal chart of one of his main inspirational characters, Alfred Jarry (see yesterday's post):
Brewton had a Fire Grand Trine linking Venus, Mars and Uranus (with Uranus, perhaps, close to natal Moon - depending on time of birth). Jarry also had a Fire Grand Trine linking Venus/Uranus, Mars and Moon.

Jarry had an opposition from his Venus/Uranus conjunction to Saturn.

In Brewton's case, two square aspects, one from Uranus to Saturn, the other from Moon to Pluto and Jupiter or (according to my software) a loose T-square with Uranus & maybe Moon (depending on time of birth) at its apex and a Saturn-Jupiter/Pluto opposition at its base overlaid (or underlaid) the Grand Trine.

Two men, born on different continents, 57 years apart, one man found inspiration in the work and ideas of the other. Both men died in their thirties, one from TB the other by suicide triggered by pain from spinal disease. Is it not interesting that echoes from the natal chart of one are found in the natal chart of the other?

  1. Jarry had Mars as final dispositor of all planets except Saturn in Capricorn...Brewton had Sun-Mars in mutual reception dispositing all planets except Saturn in Capricorn. Also, the two men had Venus-Mars trines, but in reverse order in the same signs. Additional quinky dinks to add to your list of quinkies. Always fascinating to find correlations between natal charts of individuals having life-experience associations. I don't have time this moment to run their charts through astro.com's synastry analysis, but there's probably more to be learned there, too.

Did you see that your blog header (link) and your pic are shown on his Google page and links to this post?!

  2. mike ~ Thanks - yes, I found it quite spooky to see Jarry's chart, after I'd first looked at Brewton's, having chosen him as Arty Farty subject because his birthday was today.

(I think you mentioned yesterday that Mercury (not Mars) was final dispositor for Jarry - not surprised if lines crossed - I had a rather cross-eyed and muddling time looking at the two charts).

No, I hadn't seen my blog references on the Google Image page - hadn't looked at it since I drafted the two posts. Hmm. Strange! I suppose Google's cyber sniffer dogs on Blogger were having an off day and not paying proper attention. :-) I've noticed, occasionally in the past, that images from my posts do turn up on Google Image pages, sometimes regarding only loosely related items, but have never seen the blog heading or my own blog photo there before.

  3. Yes, ixnay on Mars as final dispositor! Comforting to know Google is tracking your every post. I just performed a Google image search and your banner only tracks to your blog and Pearltrees:

Google doesn't list their own page of Brewton images...go figure!

  4. mike (again) ~ I'd never heard of pearltrees.com ! :-)

mike - If you have half an hour or so to spare - and this is right off topic from today's post - would you take a look on naked capitalism.com, at some comments and let me know your opinion.
Relates to wikileaks releases and relates to - well - innuendo, codewords etc. Conversation begins with Commenter Jim Haygood on 4 Nov 2016 at 9.51am and goes on down as far as Antifq on 4 Nov 2016 at 3.07pm

    http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2016/11/links-11416-2.html

Not sure if it's anything to take seriously, coincidence or....whatever.

  5. Well, as is said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar...or cheese is just cheese.

There have been additional replies after Antifq. I agree with:
    Waldenpond November 4, 2016 at 8:26 pm
"What a crock of sh#t. This is not a suspicious use of the word cheese. It is nothing but a vapid boring person writing in emo terms about friggin’ cheese and desperately trying to make themselves seem interesting..."

Note that Steve H. November 4, 2016 at 8:04 pm provides the link to the email in question. Jim Haygood omitted from his excerpt the Xmas exchanges between the two communicators: https://wikileaks.org/podesta-emails/emailid/30613

Now, this email that Jim Haygood (November 4, 2016 at 10:37 am) provides does have me perplexed:
    https://wikileaks.org/dnc-emails/emailid/7036

    I enjoyed this exchange:
Antifq 4 Nov 2016 @ 3:07 PM "... In the public realm, politicians have codewords, so do cops, doctors, drug dealers, truck drivers, people who review books or art, even school kids have words for things they don’t want their parents to understand."

Reply MyLessThanPrimeBeef 4 Nov 2016 @ 4:20 PM "I wonder what ‘hope’ or ‘change’ means, for politicians."

LOL! I hadn't considered that slogan as politician code (for FU?).

  6. From http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/sciencefair/2016/11/03/november-supermoon-biggest-nearly-70-years/93234382/

"The November full moon is not only the closest full moon of 2016, NASA said, but also the closest full moon since 1948 (which is still the last time the Cleveland Indians won the World Series).

This is one you might want to watch out for: The full moon won’t come this close to Earth again until Nov. 25, 2034, NASA says.

The moon will look plenty full and bright all night on Nov. 13 and 14 as it rises in the east around sunset, climbs highest around midnight and then sets in the west at or near sunrise, EarthSky reports.

The exact moment of the full moon is the morning of Nov. 14 at 8:52 a.m. EST, (7:52 a.m. CST, 6:52 a.m. MST, and 5:52 a.m. PST), Space.com said."

  7. mike (again) ~ Thank you for taking a look at those exchanges and your observations on 'em. I felt the same as you, more or less, re the Christmas gift one. Yet, the tone of it IS quite strange, from friend to friend, looking at it in one way. That one could be taken either way. The one about the handkerchief and map can't really be anything but peculiar, and likely code. Lollipops too - that one is not open to an ordinary interpretation.

Then there was something on Twitter today from the wikileaks mails, trending most of the day too - something about "spirit cooking". If you Google it it'll probably take you to relavent Twitter threads or other links. Nast...eeee, in an Aleister Crowley sort of way.

I wouldn't be surprised to find these kinds of things going on in those circles. Those characters tend to think they are above and beyond the law and decent behaviour, believe they can do exactly as they please with impunity. But whether these e-mails are evidence of that is a different matter.

  8. mike (again) ~ Thanks for the reminder of the big supermoon on 14th. Should be a lovely sight, if skies are clear. :-)

  9. Re "Spirit cooking" dinner - Snopes provides a more rational explanation:
    http://www.snopes.com/john-podesta-spirit-cooking/

Perhaps the interpretation of these emails is more about the minds of the beholders than the authors of the emails.

    ReplyDelete
  10. mike (again) ~ Snopes' explanation is a bit iffy, but they did their best to clean up the mess. What came to my mind by the end of their explanation -(a parody of something else) - "when someone talks of spirituality, I hide the spoons". ;-/

Regarding the other wiki-leaks "code-word" thing - at naked capitalism this morning one or two commenters mention the topic again at the top of this mornings comment thread.
One says they suspect the "code" might relate to drugs rather than pedophilia.
Definitely something untoward goin' on though, in my opinion.

  11. Well, this is a time for anyone and everyone to make whatever sense they desire out of anything and nothing...LOL. I see the news of the morning is Qatar's $1 million to the Clinton Foundation putting Hillary in the hot seat. Melania (aka Malaria) Trump was in the USA and worked 10 gigs without a work permit according to the Associated Press...bear in mind that Malaria is suing various news sources for "falsely" reporting that bit...LOL. Evidence of her alleged prostitution (more lawsuits) should be out any day. Our new era of post-truth.

Very sadly, either Hill or Don will win the election, or at least I think so (!), whether the turds keep flinging in their faces or not.

BTW - Oxfordastrologer.com recommends BBC's "HyperNormalisation", which is available on youtube, or Roku's youtube channel. Look for the full-length version.

    ReplyDelete
  12. mike ~ In other words this election is, or has become for each of us, our very own Rorschach Test!

Yes, I've seen mention of "HyperNormalisation" elsewhere. Not sure I could bear to sit through it though. I did watch the whole of Adam Curtis's "The Century of Self", years ago. That was excellent. My on-line induced ADD has grown worse since then though, along with the feeling of futility, that even when one has understood what's going on and has been going on for ever, there's little one can do about it...and time left to even think of trying to do something is now severely limited - in my case. I plead old age! ;-)
