The illustration below comes from the cover of an old "Pathfinder Town Journal" dated December 1953, acquired from an antique store years ago.
In 1953 topics were much the same as we find in magazines and on the internet today - but many steps backward: the atom bomb, elections, new car models, black and white TVs, cookie recipes, winter weather, and more. No astrology column is to be found in the magazine though. A page titled Looking Ahead has a paragraph headed "What will the US be like in 1963?" In response one John E. Haines, VP of Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Co. predicted:
Now....what will America be like in 2017?
By the way, I wrote the above in December 2007. We're now much nearer to 2017 - could almost see how it'll be, squinting a little past the hurdle of the 2016 presidential election in the US. That hurdle, though, will make all the difference to how things will be in 2017, and to how things will be a further 10 years on still, which I predict will be the most unpredictable of all. Astrologically, with Pluto in Aquarius then, it'll be when real change becomes part of the universal scene.

Not bad....not bad !"Planes will fly round the world non-stop in less than 18 hours.
Rockets will reach the moon
Residential air conditioning will be as commonplace as automatic heating is today
Houses will be built of plastics."

Just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas, Twilight. Hope it's a good one for everyone.:)
ReplyDeleteHi LB.

***************************
oh Annie,
I feel we are in for a Bumpy Ride for the next 10 years- but we're tough, we're survivors, we'll get through it and prosper each in our own way in spite of it.
I believe in Magic
Merry Christmas to all of you.
Mike,
ReplyDeleteas for busy busy,, yes I am but be assured I dont let that interfer with a few minutes of internet time throughout the day:)
LB ~ Nice to see you! Merry Christmas to you and Mr LB too! :-)
ReplyDeleteSonny ~ I left a Happy Birthday message on yesterday's comments (I think your own big day's tomorrow (or have I got it muddled?) Anyway - Many Happy Returns for whenever, and I hope you'll have a lovely, peaceful Happy Christmass too!
ReplyDeleteYes, bumpy rides are us! We'll learn from whatever is to come and be all the better for it - I hope.
"The future's not ours to see Que Sera, Sera
ReplyDeleteWhat will be, will be" (Livingston & Evans)
Good thing the future isn't known in the present, yet it tends to escape us that we weave it in the here and now, minus the unavoidable natural disasters. I'm fond of the notion I first read in John Townley's blog that the future is what pulls us forward. From the extant, we tend to view the future as something without form and definition...a void in time. The astrology of the future is known, and it's those future astrological aspects that draw us forward...rather like time in reverse. That hypothesis has gained strength in the world of quantum physics, too. Even the older version of relativity incorporates past-present-future as space, time, and gravity are one.
We "derps" have really screwed-up planet Earth, so if we don't get our act together soon, the future will be a mute thought. We are too busy reaping what we can from the present.
Sonny - Happy Birthday tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteLB - Wow, you've surfaced. You've been on the missing persons list for a while! Did your kidnappers finally release you?
kidd - You've reappeared, too.
Sabina - You're still missing.
Merry Christmas Eve everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like your side-bar quotation of the day, Twilight! "The future came and went in the mildly discouraging way that futures do." Neil Gaimon
ReplyDeleteI watched PBS' "Christmas Without China" (2013) last night. If anyone is looking for something thought provoking and entertaining, this is a good documentary. Available free online and Roku.

ReplyDeleteThanks Annie and Mike..
yes , tonight at 1:53 am its Birthday time.. I'll make my bday wish before I go to bed:) I used to stay awake to do that but not anymore.
its said if you make a wish at the moment of your birth it comes true before the next bday.
we have some loud thunder and lightning strikes going on.. I'll just see this as my own person light show lol...
we'll be watching a Christmas movie marathon as the cooking and baking continues..
mike (and again) ~ Your comment ...past-present-future as space, time, and gravity are one... reminded me of the TV series "Continuum" (available on Netflix), which we've been re-watching recently (had to re-watch it to be able to take in the six new and final episodes now available, as our memories had fumbled on this rather complex story). A group of people from 2077 are catapulted back into 2012, then, due to meddlings by various people, different timelines are inadvertently established, with different versions of the same people appearing.
ReplyDeleteThere's a January post about the series:

Thanks for the PBS recommendation you've linked - will try to remember to give it a whirl.
Another of my favourite quotes on the topic of time/future, this by Steven Moffat from "Doctor Who":
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... timey wimey... stuff. There's something that doesn't make sense. Let's go and poke it with a stick.
LOL! Nice roll-call there, mike. I'll add to it with warm seasonal wishes also to:
DC (I think in Turkey).
RJ Adams, who left these fair shores a few months ago and now lives in France.
Bob (and his various screen-names)
JD in Scotland
Vanilla Rose in England
Rossa in England
And any others who might, from time to time, lurk around - as I do myself at various blog places.
mike ~ Yeah, kidnapped by Neptune/Saturn you might say. Merry Christmas to you and your little family.:)
ReplyDeleteAnd same to you Sonny, with a BIG Happy Birthday wish thrown in as well!
Wishing *everyone* all the best this holiday season.
Season's Greetings, friends.
ReplyDeleteA musical gift from the North - my favorite version is by Tom Jackson (half Cree Metis actor and singer). Enjoy!
