Neptune

 Coin of Sextus Pompeius,
showing the god Neptune
here
December 1st - in ancient Rome on this date a festival in honour of their god Neptune was held. We've long since abandoned the idea of gods, but Neptune remains, as a far away planet and as an astrological concept, which we can still choose to celebrate if we feel so inclined.

Astrological Neptune has provided astrologers with lots of leeway to imagine, suppose, suggest, wax lyrical on its possible interpretations - in fact entire books have been written about Neptune by astrologers.

In the section on Neptune in Louis MacNeice's book "Astrology" he notes that astrologer Ingrid Lind suggested that, in the cases of slow-running planets, the transits are the things to look for, and wrote that Neptune's transits lead to muddle - she adds "it really takes a strong and sane man to control the Neptune in him". Readers are left to surmise how a woman reacts to her Neptune! Astrologer Evangeline Adams said that Neptune has more to do with Zeitgeist than with individuals.

It takes Neptune around 15 years to pass through one zodiac sign. Neither Neptune nor Pluto can complete the zodiac in a human lifetime, so there's no chance to compare what happened last time an indivdual experienced, say, Neptune conjunct Sun in Aquarius, because there was no last time and there will be no next time. Neptune's stay with any of our personal planets is a one-time-only affair.

Neptune, modern ruler of Pisces, is briefly described by Rob Tillett:

"Neptune, the planet of deception and spiritual enlightenment, rules the oppressed and abandoned: the misfits of society. On a higher level it rules visionaries, and those who are glamorous and charismatic. It represents spirituality, mysticism, and ideals.

Speaking personally, Neptune's house position and its aspects with other planets in your chart will describe spirituality, abstract thinking, illusion, disillusionment, and areas of your life where things aren't always what they seem. It rules derangement, guilt, persecution and describes the potential for experiences related to confinement, abandonment, and addiction or physical intolerance to drugs and alcohol.

Neptune's role in society is often to cloud the issues, making things seem other than they are. Neptune is the master of disguise. Ruling oil, liquids, solvents (and makeup!), this mighty force usually operates beneath the surface, but can be brought into the forefront of consciousness when affected by significant transits from the visible planets."

I have Neptune at 23 Virgo trine Mercury in Capricorn. I see this simply as a grounding aspect through Earthy indications. I refuse to become carried away by what I see as the more fanciful sides of astrology or of any mystical subject.

Natal Neptune in Virgo also squares Venus in Sagittarius. An astrological reading I bought many years ago mentioned (and possibly with reference to Neptune Square Venus) that I'd have disappointments in my romantic relationships. I did, but then, who doesn't?

Transiting Neptune has been conjunct natal Jupiter for much of this year. I've flipped through several interpretations online for this transit: religion and/or spirituality loom large. Neither fits for me. The single interpretation I've found that partially fits my experience, so far, is this paragraph from Aquarian Digest
Several astrology authors note about this transit that it can bring great material as well as spiritual rewards. But the material rewards, if they were to come, would come without effort during this particular transit. The real opportunity here is to focus on the transpersonal and the higher spiritual realms.
How does that fit? My absolutely "out of the blue" experience of becoming, or to become, recipient of monetary benefits from the estates of two relatives in the UK; part is still to be realised, probably sometime during next year.

  1. You state in your first paragraph that we've long-since abandoned the ideas of gods. Au contraire I say! Christianity and Islam are monotheist, though Christianity involves the trinity. I would definitely say that Neptune's astrological influence is at work with any religion. However, polytheism is alive and well here on planet Earth, with some Buddhism variations, Shinto, Hindu, etc. Neptune itself, rules the notion of worship, idolatry, and false idols.

In many aspects of the modern world, it can be said that we use icons and prototypes as gods. Neptune rules film and Hollywood's constant output of movie stars supplies a steady stream of super-natural idols...ordinary people that the masses endow with abstract adoration. Same for many popular musicians, artists, writers, sports' figures, pastors, the pope, etc.

Neptune is the higher octave of Venus and Venus rules money, values, and material possessions. The abstract utilization and-or application of those things is ruled by Neptune. It's often said that our modern world is in a mess, because money is idolized. Communism, socialism, and capitalism all have the spiritualistic and humanistic attendant principles, but fall apart when the illusion and disillusion of those ideologies are actually applied and human nature takes over, eg greed, power, desire.

Neptune and Pluto have very distinct astrological qualities from each other, yet both tend to intertwine...two circles, each containing a unique set, and the two circles intersect with their overlap having shared, common values. Their orbits actually overlap on occasion. For twenty years, 1979 to 1999, Pluto was closer to the Sun than Neptune. We astrologically attribute the militarization and corporatization of America to Pluto's entrance into Capricorn, but illusion, the smoke-and-mirrors, provides the backdrop. The illusion of providing security and protection has allowed a malignant growth of fascism.

  2. mike ~ Well....but we've abandoned the idea of gods in the sense that people of ancient Rome or Greece embraced a whole gaggle of 'em...gods with a small g as against God with a capital, who many still embrace in some way, or under some name. Trinity is, I think, just 3 aspects of the same God.

We do tend to make mini metaphorical gods of celebrities, agreed. There's possibly still something in our human DNA that urges it.

Erm...who said that "Neptune is the higher octave of Venus" ? I don't accept that - it's some astrologer's declaration - part of that dratted astro board game! Neptune is Neptune. Venus is Venus. Illusion and disillusion can apply to everything - absolutely everything - so Neptune can apply to everything - we might as well say that Neptune is the higher flippin' octave of everything. ;-/

  3. Well, each to their own...LOL. MANY astrologers consider that Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury, Neptune is the higher octave of Venus, and Pluto is the higher octave of Mars. Here's a sampling of Neptune as higher octave of Venus:

"Neptune is the planet of inspiration. The higher octave of Venus, Neptune brings beauty to a higher, more spiritual level. It also holds sway over dreams, the subconscious, illusions, fantasies and all things magical and enchanting."
    http://astrologyzone.com/tools/neptune.html

"NEPTUNE is called the higher octave of Venus, the planet of personal love, values, and assets. What in the world does "higher octave" mean? Personal love becoming universal love; values and assets becoming universal, too. Does that seem reasonable? The outer planet, Neptune, is the higher and more universal expression of the more self centered urges of the human conditions represented by Venus."

"Neptune is known as the higher octave of Venus and is the second of the transcendental planets."
    http://www.astrology.com/article/planets-neptune.html

"Neptune is considered to be the higher octave of Venus because both planet's are gaseous and both strive to achieve the higher ideals of mankind; Venus through the adoption of beauty and Neptune through unconditional love."
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generational_planet

"It is one of Neptune’s main functions as the higher octave of Venus. It connects our smaller selves with the greater, and inspires us to make something of our visions."
    http://sasstrology.com/2010/12/synastry-studies-navigating-neptune.html

"Neptune is often referred to (by me, anyway) as the 'higher octave of Venus.' Where Venus is associated with personal relationships and affection, Neptune is divine love and compassion."
    http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/astrologicalmusings/2008/01/a-week-of-venus.html#W0fB5CTiJqZd1Gg3.99

"Neptune the planet that rules the sign of Pisces and is the higher octave of the planet Venus..."
    http://www.terrynazon.com/neptune.html

"Sometimes considered a 'higher octave' of Venus, Neptune liberates one from intellectual consciousness, bringing extremes of beauty and love to the senses and emotions."

  4. well by golly, it look me a couple hours but I found it.... wooohoooo

I have neptune in the 7th house- Libra..

    its says:::

This makes people born with Neptune in 7th house a very accommodating person, especially with your need to restore peace and justice wherever you see wrongdoing.

thats me Babe:) champion of the down trodden, whether they want help or not.. lol lol

  5. mike (again) ~ Yep - I knew they could be brought to gang up on me (LOL!) But I'm not impressed. In fact, I'm not impressed by a lot of astrology's fluff and moss that has gathered through writers needs to fill books and articles over the centuries. I'm certain, though, there's something valid in astrology - something - just not everything, not every word that flows from astrologers' mouths, pens and keyboards.

As I've written before - we don't know what astrology actuallty is, nor why it sometimes works quite spookily. The game's wide open to make stuff up. The higher octave thing is a poetic concept, if one likes that kind of thing, but it feels wrong to me.

  9. Sonny - You have Neptune in your 12th house. Look at your natal chart and locate Neptune (the pitchfork-looking symbol)...it's in Libra, 12th house. You have an ascendant at 26*40' Libra...that's where your first house begins. It means that when you were born, 26*40' of Libra was above the horizon. The first house begins at the horizon, but BELOW the horizon. You have the remaining 3*20' of Libra in your first house, plus the next 25* of Scorpio. Your 12th house starts at 3* Libra and ends at 26*40' Libra, therefor your Neptune at 19* is in the 12th house.

If you look closely, you'll see Saturn is 2* Libra, which is in your 11th house, but within a degree of your 12th house cusp at 3* Libra.

Neptune is the ruler of the 12th HOUSE (Pisces is the natural SIGN of the 12th house and Pisces has Neptune as planetary ruler). Libra is the natural SIGN of the 7th house, but in your natal chart, Libra has residency in your 12th and 1st houses.

  11. well shucks.. least I had the libra and 19 degrees right , lol..

so now I need to go look up the 12th house neptune and see what it says..

your opinion, Mike.. is it a good or not so good thing to have the planet in its own house-- as you said 12th was its natural ruler....

    -------
went to see what it said-- yes I am somewhat phycic:) really I am.. that got me in loads of trouble as a kid, later on I learned to keep quiet about what I "heard//felt//knew".. I've always called it the KNOWING THING.. I cant call upon it- it either does or doesnt just pop in my head.. But I sure have learned to listen to it and act accordingly, which I believe is what kept me from having a more difficult life.
    ---------
ohh yeaaa- Mike, thanks for your comment on my decor. glad you were able to respond as annonymous. whatever the glitch was before, when you couldnt must have fixed itself..
