Continuing the series of monthly posts on Fixed Stars in each tropical zodiac sign, a look at the list for Sagittarius.
Data comes from Astroweb (HERE), showing star positions in 1900 in the left-hand column and in 2000 on the right.
Astrological interpretations for some of those stars, if found to be tightly conjunct a natal personal planet, or important point, are available online. A good, all-encompassing website to investigate for this is Constellation of Words.
The ecliptic, apparent path of the Sun, shown as a faint dotted red line in the image above, is a circular "track" around the celestial sphere; the zodiacal belt is a region circling the celestial sphere. The circle of the ecliptic passes through the middle of the zodiacal belt. It can seem a tad confusing that some stars in our tropical zodiac sign Sagittarius are actually within the constellation of Scorpio. Modern Tropical astrological divisions of the ecliptic into 12 equal segments throws up this peculiarity. It's best, for me, just to accept it, the alternative being a move into sidereal astrology, and that would confuse the grey matter terribly!
I mentioned the Scorpio/Sagittarius confusion because the brightest star from the Sagittarius list, the one I'll scribble on about, Antares, is actually located in the constellation of Scorpio - right at the Scorpion's heart in fact! The Sagittarius Archer's arrow (and star Alnasi) points directly at Antares, and heart of the Scorpion.
Antares is a giant red star, famous as being one of the four Royal Stars of Persia(see my archived post HERE). In ancient Egypt and Greece temples were erected in ways to coincide with the star's cycles. It's thought that the star's name comes from the term Anti-Ares, i.e. similar to, or rival of Ares/Mars, possibly due to its red colour or the fact that Mars was traditionally the ruler of Scorpio.

[Antares] A Royal star, likened to the influence of Mars and Jupiter, Antares offers extremes of success, good fortune, danger and malevolence. It clearly indicates the potential for great power, but where this is simply 'power of will' without integrity or wisdom, it carries the threat of ruination. Lilly warns that it can indicate a rash, head-strong person who is destructive to himself by his own obstinacy. The direction of the luminaries to this star usually indicates great honour and advancement, but always there is a warning not to fall victim to its ruthless energies. Of the Sun directed to this star Lilly writes:
It discerns many honours, if the native be careful, and be not deceived by soldiers. It doth many times produce a burning fever, or some violent act, and prejudice the right eye.
I enjoyed this relevant piece by astrologer Boots Hart at astroPPM
My single natal planet in Sagittarius is Venus at 20 degrees, conjunct Atria and Ras AlHague. What has Constellation of Words website to tell me?
Nothing for Atria: No myths or astrological interpretations are linked to these stars because Triangulum Australis was not visible to the ancients in the northern hemisphere.Oo..kay!
For Ras Alhague ("a sapphire star on the head of the Snake Charmer" in constellation Ophiuchus) --- With Venus: Quick mind, well educated, cautious, secretive, suspicious. [Robson*, p.193.]
Anyone else have links to the Sagittarius stars?
Blinded and depraved! Acumen and Sinistra are conjunct my Mars...Sinistra is exactly conjunct. I am left-handed. My left-handedness was one of my first encounters with being tortured for my style of expression, as my elementary teachers consistently punished my choice of hands. I was the first to write in my class, but was never given the gold (or any other color) star for the achievement. I can still recall the frustration in my teachers' voices. Their reaction was on the same level as someone that lacked bowel control...LOL. Constant, multiple times a day reprimands, even in art...holding the watercolor brush or crayon in my left hand was a verboten misdemeanor. I never caved-in and continued being a lefty. My natal Mars is square Saturn, so definitely afflicted.
ReplyDeleteI see that you have "dangerous passions" upon your Venus with Maasym now conjunct. Have you warned anyjazz?
mike ~ I wonder why so many fixed stars have ancient interpretations linked to blindness or eye problems - seems to come up somewhere in every batch.
ReplyDeleteOh - you are in line with Sinistra ! Thank goodness the prejudice against left-handedness has disappeared. My Dad would have been naturally left-handed, but was hounded at school to use his right hand, at least for writing - which he did, resulting in a rather nice and instantly recognisable style of handwriting. He still used knife and fork left-handedly and was pretty much ambi-dextrous otherwise.
LOL - I'll warn Anyjazz - but his North Node of Moon is conjunct my Venus in Sag. I expect we neutralise one another's danger. ;-)
I've just noticed another interpretation of Ras AlHague at Terry Nazon's site:
Trouble with women, drugs, poisoning, hallucination, medicines, infections, mystical healing. What fun!
http://www.terrynazon.com/fixedstars.html
I also was left handed and allowed to be so at home. Coloring, writing and eating.
ReplyDeleteat 4 1/2 I entered catholic school and I did Cave to the sisters and their constant reprimands , especially when they brought in the priest to chastise me in front of the whole class:( of course I got bad penmanship grades the whole year.
My grandmother practiced with me all the following summer so I could improve with my right hand and be ready for 1st grade. its no wonder my thinking often goes askew, lol lol..
My daughter is sag sun, aqua moon, cap ascend.. I think that's why she's more balanced than many other sag's I've read about or known..
be back soon....
Sonny ~ I think left-handedness is supposed to be linked to artistic/creative ability.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sin that they used to try to eliminate it!
ReplyDeleteAnnie ,
while I did change hands, all I have ever done- work or play, is Creative.
in fact, my very first Paying job was at 9 years old. I stayed the summer with my grandparents in NC , my Papa-grandfather- took me to work with him and he was a building contractor. He gave me a carpenters apron, hammer and nails and made me stay close by the scrap pile- so I wouldn't be in the way.. One day during lunch break one of the carpenters taught me the basics of building a dog house. He also gave me an old saw of his. It took me 3 weeks but I did it and it sold in 2 days and that was all I needed to build my confidence:) that summer I made 14 dog houses out of scraps and sold them all.. I ended up with 94.00 in my savings account:) oh my goodness- I was RICH~! or at least felt like I was.
Though I went on to have other careers in my teens and 20's= by my early 30's I was in the building business full time and had an NC unlimited license by the time I was 35. Building is quite the creative endeavor as I also choose all the cabinets fixtures lighting carpet , wood flooring and tile.
what a Thrill and Joy it all was. wouldn't trade those memories for anything..
even catholic sisters cant change Fate..
Sonny ~ Oh my! That's such a lovely story of your experiences and obvious creative talent, possibly inherited from grandfather and maybe his grandfather - and his!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a bit surprised about your inbuilt business sense - Sun Capricorn and all that! :-)
thanks Annie..
ReplyDeletenot sure if it was the cap or the rest of all that jazz that did it. lol
as for my granddad his dad ,g'dad and g'grandad were also farmers. oh yea and Moonshine Runners .. If ya google Shoals NC , it hasn't changed much. Its a part of NC where Deliverance could have easily been filmed.. when my g'dad moved down to Winston salem, his whole family said- Bob's gone citified:) and believe me WS wasn't much of a city when he came here in the late 1920's..
The culture shock for me going from NY to NC in the summers was beyond explanation. Yet I found kind and loving folks in both places..
Sonny ~ Hmmm - sons of the soil - similar to my own then, though mine didn't have the fun of Moonshine (well, only natural moonshine). It's funny that this conversation came up, I've been mulling over how to slant a post about how important place of birth is, as to how one can or might develop, even apart from astrology's need for knowledge of p.o.b. -and maybe even in spite of astrology. Dunno, maybe I'll get to it after the weekend if sufficient inspiration strikes, haven't quite got the right perspective yet. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnnie,
ReplyDeletesince you bring that up I remember I used to have a book about Locational Astrology. I can't rememeber what method was used, but somehow your chart gave a list of 5 to 8 different locations would be correct for your vibration. it was an old book when I got it at a thrift shop and I have no idea what the name or author was..
I'll be looking forward to reading what you post, as always:)
oh yea- just wanted to say I notice I've been pretty CHATTY on your last few posts and I didn't wanna feel like I was high jacking your posts:)
Sonny ~ Locational astrology is a wee bit specialised for my taste, but I have looked into it before. I think astrology might take a back seat in my post - if it ever gets written.
ReplyDeleteHi-jacking? Of course not - I'm glad to see you here any old time! It's hardly as if there's a line of commenters hammering on the bloggy door ! You're helping keep the old ship afloat - and thank you so much for that. :-)
Sonny, your natal for New York and Winston-Salem are up at this link:

ReplyDeleteI see some of my numbers changed..
