HERE'S TO 2015!

"No one ever regarded the First of January with indifference. It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left. It is the nativity of our common Adam."
- Charles Lamb

What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That's not been said a thousand times?
The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.
We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.
We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.
We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our prides, we sheet our dead.
We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that's the burden of a year.
- Ella Wheeler Wilcox

"We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential."
- Ellen Goodman

  1. Well, it all looks the same to me today, maybe a bit colder this morning than yesterday. It isn't easy to delineate the move from December 31 to January 1, or 2014 to 2015...and that's reassuring to me...LOL. Ringing-in the new year appealed to me when a young adult, but quickly lost its luster as adult responsibilities became ever more prominent and it simply became a day I didn't typically have to work, though I have worked a couple.

I always feed my GiGi and Junior after the national news finishes and walk GiGi starting about 6:15 PM. We've had a number of cloudy days and evenings, but the several clear days recently have had slightly more daylight on our walk. The longer days become very apparent in another week or two. So, from that perspective, it IS a new year!

BTW - Have you noticed Venus on the western horizon just after sunset? She's a beauty. And Jupiter has been rising earlier in the east, now about 9 PM, and is another sight to behold.

  2. mike ~ It's VERY cold here, still at 30* and almost noon, with prediction of freezing drizzle or ice pellets today and/or tomorrow. We shall not be venturing out at all!

After watching a couple of movies via Roku last evening we flicked to broadcast TV hoping to see a countdown to midnight from somewhere in the CT zone (or a repeat of New York's doings)...but failed, so toasted the New Year according to time on the computer - it was a few mins after 12 by the time we realised TV wasn't going to oblige.
The countdown in USA is a tricky thing to televise due to time zones - something the UK doesn't have to worry about, so there there's a big deal made of it there. I miss that part of New Year here.

I haven't been out in the dark since Christmas Eve so planet spotting hasn't been possible - but I did remark on a very bright star seen on our drive back from the family get-together, 24 December, maybe that was Venus. Our kitchen window faces East, so I'll look for Jupiter if it's clear (unlikely tonight or tomorrow though).
