We saw Splice the other evening. In case a passing reader hasn't heard, it's a movie about a couple of scientists who create a creature from a mix of animal/bird/fish/human DNA. Suspense of disbelief, suspended to a very great height, is required as well as a distinct lack of delicate sensitivities when it comes to sexual shenanigans - of which there are one or two. The movie was made in France. Sensitivities are somewhat rougher hewn there than in the USA.
I found the movie engaging - I wasn't bored - always a good sign. I found parts of it to be darkly funny. Movies these days seem to need "a message" - in this case there were several, pick and mix 'em rather like the DNA they used. The message I took from it is that life force, whether human, animal, bird, fish, whatever, is not a warm cuddly entity. It has an inbuilt ferocity which became necessary aeons ago out of necessity, for it to to develop, and continue to survive, against all odds. Hence, astrologically, our Mars traits and the Fire element, characterised long ago by the ancients.
Splice was written and directed by Vincenzo Natali, born in the US but grew up in Canada. His only other well-known film is Cube. I didn't see that one, but it sounds like another strangely intriguing story. I took a peek at Natali's natal chart, expecting to see Uranus (planet of all that's futuristic) well placed.
Here it is:
Uranus in Libra is in close trine (harmonious aspect) to his natal Mercury in Aquarius (rulership of Uranus). Uranus is also semi-sextile Mars, at home in mysterious and darkly erotic Scorpio.
The movie ended on a note ripe for continuation via sequel.....
"How bad could it be?" the scientist asks the CEO. I'd hazard a guess: Pretty darn bad!

I gather the special effects were good?

WWW
I haven't seen this. must watch out for it.
ReplyDeleteWWW ~~ Yes very good. It was a fairly low-budget movie and most of the $$$$$ must have gone into the CGI for "the creature" which, at various stages was either all CGI or a mix of a human and CGI, young then adult. Very clever stuff.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm into sci-fi just now. Trying to avoid post-apocalyptic movies though - seen too many of those. This one was different.
anthonynorth ~~ Yes, do - I think you'd enjoy it. :-)
