There are only two living female vocalists I'd go to a lot of trouble and expense to hear singing in concert: kd lang, or today's subject Diana Krall, and it happens to be her birthday.
Born 16 November 1964 in Nanaimo, Canada (time unknown). 12 noon chart below.
Diana is a gifted jazz pianist as well as the best interpreter of lyrics since Sinatra (in my opinion). Her rare talent for interpretation comes from Scorpio Sun/Neptune - it cuts to the heart of any story in song, lays it out there, blood, tears an' all for the listener to absorb. Her deep Scorpio bits are flanked on one side by Venus in its own arty sign of Libra and on the other side by Mercury the communications planet in happy-go-lucky Sagittarius - reflecting that her emotional renderings can morph quite easily into jazzy, sharp and worldly-wise interpretations of more upbeat songs.
Her Moon would be in Aries whatever the time of birth - it's likely helpfully aligned with Mercury in Sagittarius, a hint that her true inner self is lighter and brighter than the melancholy image presented by some of her vocals.
Jupiter in Taurus opposite her natal Sun/Neptune repeats the theme of the last paragraph - Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius is balancing the deeply emotional traits of Scorpio with more down to earth, practical attitudes of Taurus.
Diana married British musician Elvis Costello in 2003, they had twin boys on 6 December 2006. Costello, 10 years Diana's senior, with Sun in Virgo has natal Venus just 2 degrees from her natal Venus (19 and 17 Libra). Her Mars and his Mercury are both at 5 Virgo. Two clear astrological links.
Here, on Letterman's late night show, Diana sings "Quiet Nights".
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DIANA!
didn't mention that there is a new moon on Diana's birthday - a rare event and something special I would think.
ReplyDeleteAdele ~~~ Yes - thanks for the reminder - New Moon will be a cherry on top of the b'day for Ms Krall ;-)
ReplyDeleteI've been lucky to see her live, T. I'm a huge fan.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday, Diana!!

WWW ~~~ Oh - yes, lucky you!!

As you have heard me say a number of times, Diana Krall has all the qualities to make her legendary. She is simply the best at what she does. Her contemporaries and indeed many of her predecessors don’t come close to her abilities.
ReplyDeleteanyjazz ~~~ Yes - she's one of "yours" who also fits very easily into "mine" (musical taste, that is). That alone is an achievement. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMeant to add to both you and Himself, T - Diana's rendition of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" had me bawling my eyes out. Publicly. I can't recall ever doing that at a concert in my LIFE. Opera yeah, concert no.
ReplyDeleteI so agree with Himself's prediction of legend. She is. Full stop.
thanks for sharing this story about diana, as i was unaware of her. the letterman performance was reminiscent of the classic sultry songstress from years past. i get a vague "otherworldly" sort of vibe from her, illustrated by the moon in aries, creating a yod to neptune and pluto. the moon / venus opposition completes this configuration in the most delightful way as she sings about quiet time with her lover.
ReplyDeleteWWW ~~~ I passed this on to Himself, and yes, "A Case of You" is one of my favourites too - I linked to a video of her singing it the last time I wrote about her (along with kd lang some time ago) so I chose a different song this time. I don't like Joni Mitchell singing the song at all (I know - wash my mouth out!) but DK's version is definitive for me. :-)
ReplyDeleteShawn ~~~ Yes, I get that "otherworldly" feel from her too sometimes, and the throw-back to the past - but combined with a new facet. As you say, that Yod connects the dots! ;-)
